Preschool Lesson about JesusThis is lesson continues our curriculum for preschoolers about knowing Jesus. Each lesson is based on a passage in the Gospel of Mark. You can read the series introduction for more explanation and links to the other lessons.
This particular lesson is from passages in Mark 15 where Jesus is on killed on a cross. This can be a sensitive and scary concept for younger children. Even so, it’s important to know how much it cost Jesus to pay for the sins of his people and earn perfect forgiveness for all his followers.

Exegetical Idea: Jesus is crucified.
Pedagogical Idea: Jesus dies on the cross, taking our sin upon His shoulders.
Cognitive Aim: Preschoolers will know they can have complete forgiveness of their sins through Jesus’ death on the cross.
Affective Aim: Preschoolers will feel great love for Jesus who suffered so much for us.
Behavioral Aim: Preschoolers will praise Jesus through song and prayer, and will memorize His Word.
Memory Verse: Colossians 2:13-14, “You were dead because of your sins…then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. He took away the record of the charges against us by nailing it to the cross.” (NLT, paraphrased)

Lesson Overview

  1. Kindle Curiosity (10 minutes) Description: Learn about crosses. Supplies: Bible outfits, wooden cross.
  2. God Revealed (15 minutes) Description: Hear the Scripture passage. Supplies: Bible
  3. Personal Pursuit (10 minutes) Description: Nail sins to the cross, worship the Lord through song, optional activity. Supplies: song The Power of the Cross sung by Stuart Townend (link found in section below), nails or tacks, hammer, wooden cross, small squares of paper, *chalk, bucket of water
  4. Daily Knowing (7-10 minutes) Description: Memorize God’s Word, pray.  Supplies: Notecards with memory verse written out for each parent.

**Before the children arrive, have the Bible outfits ready.
