4 Bible Stories About Helping Others for Kids
- Aaron and Hur Hold Up Moses’ Arms (Exodus 17:8–13). Israel won the battle while Moses kept his hands raised. When his arms grew tired, Aaron and Hur held them up until sunset. Helping a leader can change the outcome for everyone. Free lesson: Help Each Other Pray.
- Jonathan’s Armor-Bearer Stays Close (1 Samuel 14:1–23). Jonathan asked his armor-bearer to cross over to a Philistine outpost with him. - Barnabas Stands Up for Paul (Acts 9:26–27; 11:22–26). The believers in Jerusalem were afraid of Paul. Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told them how Paul had seen the Lord. - The Boy Who Shared His Lunch (John 6:1–13). A huge crowd was hungry, and a boy had five barley loaves and two small fish. - Helping can change the outcome. Aaron and Hur did not fight, but the battle turned on their help.
- Good helpers stay close. The armor-bearer went where Jonathan went.
- Kind words help people belong. Barnabas gave Paul a place among the believers.
- Small gifts matter. Five loaves and two fish were enough in Jesus’ hands.
Jesus is the greatest helper of all. He came to serve and to give His life for us (Mark 10:45). Kids can help others because Jesus served them first, not to earn His love.
Bible Verse About Helping Others: Hebrews 10:24
Hebrews 10:24 is a good memory verse for a lesson on helping others:
“And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds.” (Hebrews 10:24, BSB)
To spur someone on means to cheer them on. Ask kids to name one person they can cheer on this week.
How to Teach Helping Others in Sunday School
- Start with a two-person challenge. Pick a game one child can’t win alone, like building a paper bridge where each child may use only one hand. Kids feel how much a partner matters.
- Put the helper in the spotlight. After the story, ask: Who helped? What did they do? What changed because they helped?
- Point to Jesus. Every helper story points to Jesus, who served us first.
- Send kids out on a helper mission. Give each child one way to help someone at home this week.
