What You’ll Need
- Box with three sides
- Cookies
- Plate
- Marker
Prepare to Teach
Place the box in the teaching area. Write the word “trap” on all sides of the box. Turn the box on it’s side so that there is one open side facing the kids. Place the plate of cookies in the box. You should be able to knock the box over the plate, as if you were setting a trap.
Let’s Teach
Invite the kids in and show them the plate of cookies. “Don’t those look yummy! I think I need to eat one or two of those cookies. What do you think? Should I?” Kids will say no. Ask them, “Why shouldn’t I? Those are my favorite kind of cookies. They have chocolate chips in them. You know I can’t resist chocolate. What do you think?”
“Maybe that’s not really a trap. Maybe it just say that it is. My volunteer will help me test out my theory. I’m going to reach for a cookie. Will you stand right here with me? I’m afraid!” (Beforehand, ask an adult volunteer to push the box over your hand when you reach for a cookie. Make a big show of it, sticking your hand towards the plate and pulling back. Finally, close your eyes and reach for a cookie. When the box falls down on your hand say, “OW! It was a trap! Wow, that wasn’t worth it all. I wanted a cookie–not get caught in a trap.”
Share the verse with the class and talk about it!
