Kristin Highley’s Lord’s Prayer series for kids walks through the prayer Jesus taught, one line at a time, over eight weeks. Each part has a Sunday School lesson, a short children’s sermon with a video, and two crafts, all free to use in your Sunday School or kids church.
Here is the prayer the series teaches:
So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ —Matthew 6:9-13

Part 1: Our Father in Heaven (Matthew 6:7-15)
God is a perfect Father who never plays favorites and always listens when His children pray. Kids set the fathers of Genesis beside our Father in heaven and learn that, because of Jesus, they can come to God with confidence.

Part 2: Hallowed Be Your Name (Matthew 6:7-9; Exodus 3:1-17)
“Hallowed” means set apart as holy, and God’s name is holy. At the burning bush God told Moses His name, and kids learn to honor that name in how they speak and live.

Part 3: Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done (Acts 1:12-26)
Praying “Your will be done” means asking God to lead our choices. Kids see the disciples pray before choosing a new apostle, and learn to seek God’s will with Proverbs 16:9 and James 4:14-15.

Part 4: On Earth as It Is in Heaven (Revelation 21)
What is heaven like? Kids read Revelation 21, where God wipes away every tear, and 1 Corinthians 2:9, and learn why heaven is the hope we have in Jesus.

Part 5: Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread (1 Kings 17:8-24)
God provides what we need, one day at a time. Kids meet Elijah and the widow of Zarephath, whose flour and oil did not run out, and connect it to Jesus’ teaching on worry in Matthew 6:25-34.

Part 6: Forgive Us Our Sins (Matthew 18:21-35)
Jesus paid a debt we could never pay, and people who have been forgiven forgive others. Kids hear the parable of the unmerciful servant and learn an easy way to remember the difference between grace and mercy.

Part 7: Lead Us Not into Temptation (Genesis 3:1-15; Matthew 4:1-11)
Adam and Eve gave in to temptation in the garden, but Jesus answered every temptation from the devil with the Word of God. Kids learn to lean on God and His Word when they are tempted.

Part 8: Deliver Us from Evil (Exodus 14:5-31)
God rescued His people at the Red Sea when they had no way out. Kids learn that God delivers us from evil through Jesus, and that we need not fear, because the Lord is with us.

What about “For Thine Is the Kingdom”?
Kristin’s series ends at “deliver us from evil.” Many churches close the prayer with “For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen” (Matthew 6:13, KJV), words not found in the earliest manuscripts of Matthew. If you want a week on that closing praise, Week 5 of Prayer Power Lab closes the prayer with praise and “Amen.”
